This record is based on my knowledge and insight that I have gained over many years of coaching. My focus is on how to coach girls who are 11 to 18 years old; girls who play middle school, Aau and high school basketball. I will address all things you need to know to be a successful coach, whether you are a first timer or you have coached for ten years.
First you need to shape out your personality and the girls you coach personalities. How is going to work blending them together? My advice would be to keep a disjunction from the players. They can call me coach or Mr. D. Kids today no longer have a blind faith, it is no longer there. You have to explicate things to them and why you are doing something. You need to have patience and give yourself time to design your style. Most coaches learn from their influences (previous coaches they have whether played for or coached with). Most coaches need at least five years for a style or a religious doctrine to be developed. Remember, whatever good takes time!

Whether you are starting out as a new coach or are reevaluating the way you are doing things you have to design short term goals. What can you accomplish realistically right now? Once those goals are establish, you have to design steps to accomplish them and sell them to your team. Next you need to design a "feeder program." Go to your local recreation department, Boys and Girls Club, Cyo League...Get involved, offer clinics, camps...be visible, be active and be consistent. Once you have established a relationship, invite the kids to practices and games. Stay associated with them.
As the season starts, have your freshman and junior varsity teams mirror images of your varsity teams. At this level you should not be involved with wins and losses; fundamentals should be stressed. Within the program, you should try to keep the maximum estimate of kids in the program. The last kids on varsity and the top kids on the Jv should compete for roster spots. In choosing a team, my advice would be to keep size with no caress as opposed to size with caress with talent being equal. With minimal experience, find one thing the kid is good at and keep praising her, the idea is to try to get her hooked (build enthusiasm). You have to build within players the "love" not "like" philosophy. Great players have to love the game not just like the game. Give them something to heighten on. With smaller players I have found that they are more abundant and easier to find.
The style of play you choose is very important. Sometimes it may be dictated by your talent! Try to choose a style that is player friendly. I like to give my players relaxation on offense, if they pay hard on defense. This helps to sell the idea of playing defense. While I am on the idea of selling things to your players, you have to get your best players to buy into playing defense. This is best modeled by the increasing of Kevin Garnett to the Celtics.
Get kids in! As a coach I like to play at least nine kids. A great team bonding idea would be to program an overnight trip or a society aid scheme for the team. This will help build chemistry and design camaraderie.
Finally, April straight through November is when players become great. November straight through March is when teams become great. Your players have to stay involved in basketball while the summer. Get them to play Aau, attend camps, out of season team leagues (summer, fall leagues), open the gym in the summer for the kids. Coaching is a fulfilling, enjoyable, and thoughprovoking experience. Where else can you have an impact on so many children's lives?
